Experience in leading improvements in learning and teaching:
I have driven forward the vision for the federated Infant and Junior schools creating documentation for the subject to support a successful Ofsted inspection, including progression documents and a curriculum statement. This has involved improving the quality of education in mathematics through the use of developmental drop-ins (DDIs) to monitor and take small steps forward, and rigorous use of data including question level analysis and interventions to close gaps.
In my Mastery Specialist role for the NCETM, I work with a number of schools from the Hampshire area to improve the teaching of mathematics in their schools, meeting regularly with headteachers and other senior leaders and providing reports after each school visit. During school visits, I initially conduct learning walks and book monitoring to assess the school’s current position and create individual action plans which reflect each school’s needs. These are then used as live documents to track progress and hold all parties to account. During subsequent visits, other activities such as planning support, coaching and training can all take place, dependent on the need of each school. Once every half term, teachers are invited to observe me teaching mathematics to ensure effective practice is modelled directly.
I have an excellent subject knowledge in mathematics and am able to support all year groups in the primary phase. I gained my MA Ed. from the University of Winchester in 2018, which helped me develop specific specialist subject knowledge relating to multiplication and fractions, completing action research in KS2, and since transitioning to KS1 in 2016 I have gained a thorough understanding of early mathematics.
