Information for Schools

School Direct (SD) is an Initial Teacher Training route which prides itself on its school-centred approach.

We involve the school from the beginning so at interview you can hand-pick the graduates you feel best suit your setting. Many schools have talented graduates working as Teaching Assistants. The SD route is an ideal opportunity to 'grow your own' future teachers and leaders.

In September 2017 100% of our Primary and Secondary trainees successfully gained employment, with the majority in Portsmouth schools.

Benefits of School Direct for your school:

  • You’re more likely to recruit the right person for you.
  • You can customise the training to suit the needs of your school and trainee.
  • You can develop staff within your school’s unique ethos from day one.

The Portsmouth TSA provides some funds to each school who hosts a trainee.

Natalie Sheppard, Principal Portsmouth Academy July 2017

'Since beginning my headship here in Portsmouth in 2013, recruitment has been one of my biggest challenges. Finding high quality candidates for science, maths and English through Schools Direct, so late in the academic year, is nothing short of a miracle.  I am absolutely of the belief that we need to 'grow our own' and I feel much more confident about this thanks to the Portsmouth Teaching School and their Schools Direct programme.'

David Jeapes Head teacher at Mayfield School Portsmouth January 2017

“Mayfield School is on a rapid improvement journey and was recently judged by OfSTED as a ‘Good’ school in all areas. One of the keys to our success has been the recruitment of high quality teachers through the Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance. We have been impressed with the calibre of their trainees and the support that they offer schools and student teachers. We would recommend them highly!”

Mark Snow Head teacher at Barton Primary School IoW April 2017

'Working with the Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance, we have interviewed and recruited some really strong candidates including experienced Learning Support Assistants and Higher Level Teaching Assistants. It is encouraging that as an Island we are able to ‘Grow our own teachers’ for the future.  The interview process gives a real insight into the teaching profession and I look forward to seeing how our new recruits grow into the role”
