Information for Schools
Mike Stoneman, Deputy Director of Childrens' Services for Portsmouth City Council said ‘The sustained level of teacher recruitment through School Direct is a reflection of the growing strengths of Portsmouth's schools and their ambition to ensure all children and young people gain access to a high level of education. The School Direct model of ‘growing our own teachers’ is proving to be a successful one for Portsmouth. This success also recognises the extraordinary ongoing support from our partner schools and mentors whose training has led to an outstanding set of results for the trainee teachers.'
School Direct (SD) is a school-based Initial Teacher Training route.
We involve our partnership schools from the beginning so at interview you get to meet the graduates who may be hosted in your school. Many schools have talented graduates working as Teaching Assistants and our School Direct route is an ideal opportunity to 'grow your own' future teachers and leaders.
In September 2019 100% of our Primary and Secondary trainees successfully gained employment, with the majority in Portsmouth schools.
Benefits of School Direct for your school:
- You’can 'grow your own' teachers
- You can customise the training to suit the needs of your school and trainee.
- You can develop staff within your school’s unique ethos from day one.
The Portsmouth TSA provides some funds to each school who hosts a trainee.

Maria Dawes, Deputy Regional Schools Commissioner
'It was a real privilege to celebrate with the trainees at the end of their training year! Their hard-work, tenacity and enthusiasm for teaching was clear. It was great that they all had jobs and most were committed to staying in the area as well. Thanks for letting me join your celebrations'.
Natalie Sheppard, Principal Portsmouth Academy
'Since beginning my headship here in Portsmouth in 2013, recruitment has been one of my biggest challenges. Finding high quality candidates for science, maths and English through Schools Direct, so late in the academic year, is nothing short of a miracle. I am absolutely of the belief that we need to 'grow our own' and I feel much more confident about this thanks to the Portsmouth Teaching School and their Schools Direct programme.'
David Jeapes Head teacher at Mayfield School Portsmouth
“Mayfield School is on a rapid improvement journey and was recently judged by OfSTED as a ‘Good’ school in all areas. One of the keys to our success has been the recruitment of high quality teachers through the Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance. We have been impressed with the calibre of their trainees and the support that they offer schools and student teachers. We would recommend them highly!”
Mark Snow Head teacher at Barton Primary School IoW
'Working with the Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance, we have interviewed and recruited some really strong candidates including experienced Learning Support Assistants and Higher Level Teaching Assistants. It is encouraging that as an Island we are able to ‘Grow our own teachers’ for the future. The interview process gives a real insight into the teaching profession and I look forward to seeing how our new recruits grow into the role”
