With over 20 years’ experience in teaching, training and educational consultancy, Charlotte Raby is well placed to support schools to deliver excellence in primary English teaching. She has acted as a consultant for the Department for Education and is the lead lecturer in English at Essex and Thames Primary SCITT .

This session will include:

Looking at how we can close the word gap by teaching vocabulary in context. We will look at the most recent research and show how teaching vocabulary is crucial to children being successful at comprehension.

Exploring the research
● The impact of children’s early language experiences on vocabulary
● Children need a wide, robust vocabulary to read with comprehension
● Direct instruction is needed to close the ‘word gap’
● Robust vocabulary and language knowledge have both depth and breadth
● Teaching vocabulary in context has the greatest impact
● Vocabulary needs to be addressed in all areas of the curriculum

Effective classroom practice:
● See how contingent talk grows children’s language by providing a rich reading and talk
● Identify and teach vocabulary in context using fun and engaging activities that make
vocabulary ‘stick’
● Understand how teaching vocabulary can be used to teach English Curriculum
